for targeting the Family of Nizar Banat

The Palestinian American community condemns the Palestinian authority's brutal pressure tactics against the family of Palestinian anti-corruption activist, human rights defender, prominent critic of the Palestinian authority, and opposition candidate, Nizar Banat, who was assassinated by the Palestinian Authority’s security apparatus last year. Arafat Banat, the cousin of Nizar, and one of the main witnesses to his assassination, was arrested by the Palestinian Authority in Hebron in October of Last year.

This extrajudicial political detention aims to close the assassination file of Nizar by pursuing the Banat family to give up their demand to try Nizar’s killers by breaking into the family's homes and spreading fear among its inhabitants, in addition to arresting, defaming, and torturing some members of the family. Hussein, also a primary witness in the assassination of Nizar, and the brother of Arafat, revealed that he had been tortured, electrocuted, and threatened with death during his detention in the Palestinian Authority prisons to force him to change his testimony in the assassination of his cousin Nizar. Hussein said the authorities had bargained for his life in exchange for falsifying his testimony about the assassination. Hussein was the only person with the martyr during his arrest and witnessed the crimes of arrest and murder. He said the authority’s security agents exerted considerable physical and psychological pressure before releasing him after failing to force him to change his testimony. He said he had not received any medical treatment during his detention and had suffered greatly because of the torture long after his release.

And lately, the Palestinian Authority arrested Amar, the third cousin of Nizar, and the brother of Arafat and Hussein, for a month and half, and released him in 6/26/2022 after torturing him and failing to have him change his testimony.

We, the undersigned, strongly condemn the illegal and brutal tactics of the Palestinian Authority and express the feelings and will of the Palestinian American community and the entire Palestinian people everywhere that we hold the Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, fully responsible for the life and safety of the politically detained Arafat Banat, and we demand:

1- The trial of the killers of martyr Nizar Banat at all political and security levels.
2- The Palestinian Authority stop immediately the practice of terrorism and repression against the family of Nizar Banat.
3- The immediate release of all political prisoners in the Palestinian Authority’s prisons

الجالية الفلسطينية في أمريكا تدين بشدة استهداف عائلة الشهيد نزار بنات

تدين الجالية الفلسطينية الأساليب الوحشية والضغوط التي تمارسها السلطة الفلسطينية ضد عائلة الشهيد الفلسطيني البطل، نزار بنات، الذي ارتقى بعد ان اغتالته أجهزة امن السلطة الغادرة العام الماضي. وكانت السلطة قد اعتقلت المواطن الفلسطيني عرفات بنات، ابن عم الشهيد نزار واحد الشهود الرئيسيين على جريمة اغتياله على يد افراد أجهزة السلطة في الخليل.

واعتقلت السلطة ايضا عرفات بنات في تشرين الأول من العام الماضي في محاولة للضغط على العائلة من اجل اغلاق ملف اغتيال الشهيد نزار عبر الملاحقة عبر الملاحقة لأبناء العائلة وزجهم بالسجون واقتحام منازلهم في ساعات متأخرة من الليل وترهيب النساء والاطفال. وتقوم أجهزة السلطة بالضغط على عائلة بنات للتنازل عن مطلبها بمحاكمة قتلة الشهيد نزار من كافة المستويات السياسية والأمنية، وذلك عبر اقتحام منازل العائلة ونشر الخوف بين قاطنيها، إضافة الى اعتقال بعض الافراد من العائلة والتشهير بهم وتعذيبهم.

وكان حسين بنات الشاهد الرئيس في قضية اغتيال الناشط الشهيد نزار بنات، وأخو الأسير عرفات، قد كشف انه تعرض للتعذيب والصعق بالكهرباء والتهديد بالقتل اثناء اعتقاله في سجون السلطة بهدف تغيير شهادته في جريمة اغتيال ابن عمه نزار. وقال حسين ان أجهزة السلطة ساومته على حياته مقابل ان يدل بشهادة مخالفة حول الجريمة. وكان حسين الوحيد مع الشهيد اثناء اعتقاله وتصفيته. وقال انها مارست ضغوط كبيرة جسدية ونفسية قبل الإفراج عنه بعد فشلها في اجباره على تغيير شهادته. واضاف انه لم يتلق أي علاج اثناء فترة اعتقاله وانه عانى كثيرا من جراء التعذيب بعد إطلاق سراحه لمدة طويلة.

وفي الفترة الاخيرة تم اعتقال عمار بنات ابن عم الشهيد واحتجازه وتعذيبه لأكثر من شهر ونصف قبل ان يتم الافراج عنه بتاريخ 26/6/22 نتيجة للضغوط الشعبية والنقابية والسياسية. ولا تزال الضغوط تزداد عنفا وضراوة على عائلة بنات من قبل أجهزة السلطة الامنية.

اننا الموقعين ادناه اذ ندين بشدة ممارسات السلطة الفلسطينية فأننا، وتعبيرا عن مشاعر وإرادة الجالية الفلسطينية في أمريكا وفي جميع انحاء تواجد الشعب الفلسطيني بما فيها كامل فلسطين التاريخية المحتلة، نحمل رئيس السلطة، محمود عباس، المسئولية الكاملة بضمان عدم التعرض لأبناء عائلة بنات وضمان امنهم وسلامتهم من ضغوط وتحرش أجهزة السلطة الأمنية بهم، ونطالب بشدة بأن يتم:

1- محاكمة قتلة الشهيد نزار على كافة المستويات السياسية والأمنية.
2- التوقف الفوري عن ممارسة الإرهاب والقمع ضد عائلة نزار بنات.
3- الافراج الفوري عن كل الاسرى السياسيين والمقاومين المناضلين ضد الاحتلال الصهيوني المعتقلين في سجون السلطة الفلسطينية الغاشمة.
