In the wake of a tragic accident, which killed a fellow student and cyclist, members of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Biketopia are asking community members to join forces and call for a safer Cornelia Street/Route 3 in Plattsburgh, N.Y., turning the busiest commercial section in the region into an area which is accessible to bicycles, pedestrians and people of all abilities.
The following petition will be sent to local town and city officials as well as the New York State Department of Transportation.
I join SUNY Plattsburgh’s Biketopia in support of "Complete Streets" policies that require state and local road agencies to design and maintain roadways for all users, of all ages and abilities.
We wish to memorialize the loss of Yee Hao "Bryan" Chiel, who died in a bicycle collision – and to push for the redesign of Cornelia Street (Route 3) in Plattsburgh, to include bicycle lanes and improved sidewalks and crosswalks. The streets of our cities and towns are an important part of the livability of our communities. They should be designed for everyone – young or old, motorist, bicyclist or bus-rider, walker or wheelchair user.
We implore the City of Plattsburgh, the Town of Plattsburgh and the New York State Department of Transportation to adopt Complete Streets policies and build a safer, cleaner, more sustainable transportation system – particularly on Route 3, where Bryan lost his life.
