Thanks to everyone who signed and supported this campaign. Your support for this petition brought more scrutiny by the Council to the Town's plan to build housing on the coal ash. As a consequence, the Town Manager has announced a plan that delays the housing component of the redevelopment plan for now.
For decades an unlined coal ash dump has been polluting the center of Chapel Hill. The coal ash is leaching toxic metals and other pollutants into the environment around Bolin Creek, where families recreate and children explore and play. The coal ash dump is located on the Chapel Hill Police Station property on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just above the Bolin Creek greenway.
The town discovered the coal ash dump several years ago but has not committed to cleaning it up. The town has said it will wait for Gov. McCrory's discredited Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to tell it what to do, which likely could mean no cleanup. Chapel Hill needs to live up to its reputation as an environmental leader and remove the coal ash from this unlined dump site next to a public greenway and in an important watershed.
Friends of Bolin Creek is a grassroots conservation group dedicated to protecting the Bolin Creek watershed and the natural places we love in Chapel Hill. We are parents and grandparents, teachers and community leaders. But we can't do this alone – we need you to speak out against this unlined coal ash dump in the center of our town.
All the utilities in South Carolina have committed to cleaning up all their unlined coal ash pits. This is the right thing to do, and we know it can be done. But we need your help – tell the Mayor and Town Council to clean up Chapel Hill’s coal ash dump!

We, the undersigned, call on the Town of Chapel Hill and its elected leaders to commit to remove the coal ash from the Police Station property to lined, dry storage away from our creeks and waters.
