Cairns public transport is slow and inefficient. We have an existing rail network and a beautiful train station in Cairns Central and trains are much more suitable than buses for the reasons of speed, punctuality and the capacity for bicycle transport.
Cairns being such a hot city for much of the year, waiting at bus stops for buses that are often late and sitting on a bus that has limited air conditioning for a lengthy journey make the experience unpleasant and combined with having to walk once the bus is alighted from, the passenger can arrive at work, school or social outing in a lather of sweat. Being able to take a bicycle on the train will make both forms of transport much more efficient and practical.
Modern trains are also much cleaner and greener for purposes of energy efficiency. The council has informed me that city trains have been disregarded as a future public transport option. That will not do.
We, the undersigned, wish to see a fast, comfortable and efficient commuter train running from Gordonvale to Redlynch, and eventually to Smithfield. We rely on the Cairns Regional Council to implement this plan.
