Child Bullying in Wortham

Our children in the city of Wortham, Texas are being bullied in school and in the neighborhoods. Children are being made fun of because of physical appearance and social standing.

On several occasions children have been called names, hit, and had objects thrown at them. Bullies have also been making faces at them, and bullying them with intimidating actions to make the children feel threatened. The parents and residents of Wortham feel that speaking to authority at Wortham ISD and the Wortham Police Department are not getting satisfactory results.

Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn, also school administrators, such as principals, can play a powerful role in bullying prevention. They can inspire others and maintain a climate of respect and inclusion. Students feel safer and can focus on learning, parents worry less according to stopbullying.gov. A school that fails to respond appropriately to harassment of students based on a protected class may be violating one or more civil rights laws enforced by the Department of Education and the Department of Justice, including: Title IV and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Also "School must be an active participant in responding to harassment and should take reasonable steps when crafting remedies to minimize burdens on the targeted students".

If the bullying is not taken care of immediately, a formal grievance may be filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
