In the town of a population of 50,000 students plus and ever growing, Katy Independant School District has become even more strict than before on websites students can and cannot access at school.
The program they use to determine what is good and what is not is the common program "Websense". Many students find this was a good move at first but now it has gotten out of hand. One school in the district, James E. Taylor High School, had the school paper do a project. The school blocks many known resource sites like Wikipedia and also blocks any kind of religion sites. Two topics blocked are Abortion and Gays.
Many students find this offensive in a county that has "Free Speech", or the illusion of it, in the constitution to be blocked in PUBLIC GOVERNMENT run schools. Many students in the district do not have access to computers at home so they are restricted to the strict computers at the school so they are unable to have the freedom the fortunate ones do.
I can understand the block of porn at school but music is entirely unnessecary along with resources, like Wikipedia, to be blocked that could be used to a student's entertainment or school use.
We, the undersigned, call on the Katy Independent School District to cease the use of Websense on websites that do not require an age limit to access.
