The City of Casey is known for its large scale projects and spending. It is time for residents and ratepayers to have a say on what goes on. The Cranbourne Aquatic and Leisure Centre is a very large scale project and may be viewed as a duplication of the Casey ARC in Narre Warren.
It has been a project where the funds for it have been delved into by the councillors to fund other projects and therefore blows the costs out even more. Now it is suggested that the costs of the project is at around 36 million dollars. Could not a smaller facility do the job? The plans for the pool do indeed look impressive and functional, but at what cost. Rates will probably increase a further 3% because of this project and Casey ratepayers have already been slugged for many rate rises already.
When will residents begin to realise that every project that council begins will cost us ultimately. The whole project has been mismanaged and needs to be scrapped.
We, the residents, businesses and ratepayers of the City of Casey, feel that the Cranbourne Aquatic and Leisure Centre, although impressive and functional, may be too large a project to continue with. In the times of drought and increasing council rates, we fear that costs will begin to create too much debt for the municipality and encourage council rates to rise.
We that sign this petition ask the City of Casey stop any further progress on the Cranbourne Aquatic and Leisure Centre and begin again with a more conservative view of the project. We ask that further public consultation be had and an effort to reduce the costs of the project to half of the 36 million dollars it may cost the City of Casey and its ratepayers now.
We ask that the City of Casey make all efforts to reduce borrowings for major projects and build them as the funds are saved for such projects. We ask that the City of Casey reconsider the sustainability of such an aquatic centre and be mindful of how current drought conditions will affect the viability of the project also.
