Many of you know that the Indian Embassy is introducing a 90 pounds fee for cancellation of Indian passports. On the website of the embassy in London the information is displayed but there is no information about when it is going to be implemented.
Many Indians in UK applied for OCI Card during last month received the notification to send the cancelled passport’s details. These new changes came to our notice recently only. Mostly it will take many weeks to receive the OCI card and now we need to reapply for the same thing along with the details of the cancelled Indian passport.
Previously, there was no fee for the cancellation of the passport. With the new rules every UK Indians who applied for OCI card need to produce the cancellation details of their passport. And currently Indian embassy in UK introduced £90 for every Indian passport to cancel it. An average Indian family need to pay £360 to £450 with the current fees.
None of the Indian embassies in the world have these sets of rules. Earlier for every OCI card an overseas Indian need to pay £165 as fee and now we need to pay extra £90 on top of it as cancellation charges of every Indian passport.
Those who visited the Indian embassies in UK have bitter experiences only. In a day, an Indian embassy accepts 50 OCI applications and it is till 12:30 pm only which means that we have to reach the embassy very early morning in this cold weather so as to be first 15 in the queue. If you got a chance to get inside the Indian embassy, there won’t be any seats to sit and relax also.
If you plan to surrender your passport, you can do it only in the afternoon and the High Commission won’t send the cancellation certificate by post and the applicant has to revisit the embassy spending the whole day to collect it in person.
In short, Indian embassies in the UK are worse than Governmental offices in India and not showing any kind of humanitarian consideration to Indians in UK rather than helping us.
