The conflict in Syria has created the largest refugee crisis since the Second World War.
Last year saw 3,695 people drown and hundreds of thousands more endure a desperate march of misery across the continent.
There is an enormous human cost of war, persecution and human rights abuses that force people to abandon their homes in search of refuge. We provide emergency relief to desperate men, women and children who have fled to Europe’s shores.
Tackling the reasons people are forced to flee their homes in places such as Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea must of course remain a priority. However, in the absence of peace, people will continue to flee. We must provide them with safe, well-managed escape routes and refuge.
The undersigned call on Northampton Borough Council to answer the request by the Government and offer Sanctuary to 50 Syrian Refugee Families over the next 5 years.
The Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Programme is funded for 5 years. The first year is generously funded at £8520 per person and then tapers to £1000 in the 5th year.
The funding goes to the Local Authority so that the LA can make provision for Accommodation, ESOL, Health and Social Care. There is additional funding for School Places and for High Needs. Support is given for training and into work programmes. Some Local Authorities use some of the funding to bring empty and hard to let properties back into use.
The programme is about Resettlement, Integration and Self Sufficiency Many organisations and individuals in the town have expressed support for the programme and pledges to befriend the families as they come in.
We urge the Borough Council to do as the Government is asking and allow Northampton to make a contribution to this programme.
