A thriving community like Burwood needs high quality, secure housing that local workers can afford.
More than a third of Burwood's residents are renters, and with a median house price of $2million plus this is unlikely to change. Renters don't know where they'll go once their lease expires, or whether they can afford their next rent increase.
Solutions to this problem are complex, and they go far beyond simply building more homes. Tackling the issue will require coordination across all levels of government. But even within the current system there is much that Burwood Council can do.
We need not-for-profit housing to be included in every major new development in our area, funded with just a small share of developers' rezoning profits.
This will mean more affordable homes, and more long term tenancies so that local people can stay in our community.
We're calling on Burwood Council to:
1. Establish an Affordable Housing Policy that includes a generous target for affordable, not-for-profit housing in all new residential development in the Burwood LGA
2. Audit the developable land across Burwood to identify suitable sites for affordable not-for-profit housing
3. Acquire private land to develop Council-owned affordable not-for-profit housing
4. Implement an Affordable Housing Contribution Scheme to ensure a small share of developer profits are put towards the continuing construction and upkeep of not-for-profit housing
