One of the great things about Burwood and its surrounding suburbs is our wonderful open green space. With Wangal Park, Henley Park, Burwood Park and our own little stretch of the Cooks River foreshore, many local residents are blessed with good quality open green space just a short walk from home.
But there are some places in our community where this is simply not the case. As more development is planned and the density of our suburbs increases this will only get worse - unless the council intervenes. After all, developers don't want to build parks, they want to build apartments. But this just puts more pressure on the precious open space we do have.
Burwood needs more parks that provide trees, open space and great places to relax. A proposed "urban park" that sits above a community centre and its underground parking lot will not satisfy these needs.
As our town centre continues to expand both upwards and out towards a new Metro stop on Parramatta Road, Burwood Council must prioritise the inclusion of genuine parkland and open green space.
This must be included in any plans for rezoning across the local government area.
