United States of America

The Newport City Council is considering the purchase of the property directly South of City Hall on Highway 101. This vacant property is privately owned but is currently being used as a parking lot. The City would like to purchase the property for approximately $1.1 Million. Their plan is to make it a parking lot temporarily and then at a future time possibly build an annex to City Hall. In the mean time it would be able to serve as a "temporary permanent" home for the Newport Farmer's Market.

Although there are many city employees that park in the vacant lot there are two other public parking lots within one city block of this property. Neither of which is filled to capacity on a daily basis.

The route along Highway 101, especially south of City Hall, is an eye-sore to the community. Although Newport claims the title of "Tree City USA," very little greenery can be found in the city center and surrounding business districts. The sidewalks can often be found strewn with garbage, there are several vacant business buildings, as well as a handful of existent parking lots.

We, the undersigned, petition the Newport City Council to purchase the land adjacent to City Hall for the express purpose of turning it into a community park.

This park would be able to serve the community by providing:
(1) A permanent home for the Farmer's Market;
(2) Improve the appearance of Newport along Highway 101;
(3) It would provide a park for the growing population of young families;
(4) It could provide an attractive and highly visible venue for special events such as concerts in the park or festivals.
