We have about 5,450 students at Tufts. We have dorm capacity for about 3,375 students. If you do the math, that's a shortage of about 2,075 beds.
This isn't sustainable. As enrollment increases every year, more and more students are pushed off campus, where rents have continued to rise at a steady pace with the added demand.
This isn't just. Landlords take financial advantage of students desperate for housing, and evict residents that have lived in these neighborhoods for decades to cater to a generally wealthier student clientele.
This isn't acceptable, but it doesn't have to be this way.
If we build a new high-capacity dorm on the campus land we already have, we can bring more students back on campus, escape a vicious spiral of inflating rents and deteriorating off-campus living conditions, and coexist more equitably with our neighbors in Somerville and Medford. And while we're at it, we can have a much-needed conversation about the kind of a community we want to build as Jumbos: one that is accessible, safe, and welcoming for all.
Let's show the administration that solving this housing crisis is a priority for us as a student body!
We, the undersigned, call on the Tufts Administration and the Board of Trustees to commit to:
1) Breaking ground on a new and fully-accessible on-campus student dormitory within the next five years, and
2) Drawing up and committing to a long-term campus plan that aims to house more of our growing student body on campus, and takes into account the needs and wants of the residents of our host cities of Somerville and Medford.
