in 1979 a show like no other hit the Australian television screens and ran for an incredible 692 episodes.
Since 1979 the show has become a cult hit around the world and at one stage had 39 million viewers in the USA. To this day the show still has a massive fan base in many countries, especially in the UK and Australia.
Meeting are often held in the UK and Australia with various stars from the show. Prisoner was a unique show in so many ways. It more often than not featured actors that didn't have the typical soap start glamour look. A lot of woman who wouldn't have been given a chance on another show were given a go on this one. So many well know people either got their start on this show or become household names because of it. Someone once said " there has never been a show like it and there hasn't been since".
2009 marks the 30th Anniversary of this incredible show. It is time to bring the show back. TV is littered with reality and information type programmes. Each season there seems to be yet another medical or police drama. TV needs another vehicle to showcase new talent and even some of the older type. Prisoner did that job well once and can do so again.
People have told me that fan campaigns do not work.
I say they are wrong. Recently fans were successful in the US in having Jericho returned. Here in Australia there was a fan campaign for Hey Hey It's Saturday and now that is coming back for some shows.
Prisoner has a large fan base and is well known in many countries. There aren't any prison based drama on Australian tv. The show would be unique. In recent years shows like OZ in the US and Bad Girls in the UK have shown that the public love a good prison drama.
I'm not proposing a remake, reboot or and other word with the re prefix in it.
A sequel, a follow on show featuring some elements from the old series is what the fans want. The details of that can be discussed in the forum. This group might start small, but as was said in the movie Field Of Dreams: " Build and they will come".
The plans are to start a face book group ( done ). Then things like petitions, letter writing, talk radio.
Prisoner fans need to stand together and fight for not only what we want but also for what TV needs.
Prisoner 21st century, can you make it happen?
We the undersigned are politely requesting that Fremantle Media put into production a new series of Prisoner (Cell Block H). We ask this because we are all fans of the series and believe that the show needs to return because there is nothing else like it on television today.
You can further help this campaign by sponsoring it
The Bring Back Prisoner Cell Block H petition to Fremantle Media was written by Matthew Goodyear and is in the category Arts & Entertainment at GoPetition.
