Bring Back Matador Football

We, the undersigned, hereby pledge our support for the reinstatement of intercollegiate football at California State University, Northridge.

The Cal State Northridge Football Team can trace its roots back to 1962 when the sport was first established at CSUN. In the 39 years of competition prior to the program’s cancellation following the 2001 season, the Cal State Northridge Football program has produced numerous professional football players and a number of former coaches have coached or currently coach in the National Football League. We believe that reinstating the Cal State Northridge Team will provide a greater sense of pride and cohesiveness among current students, alumni and the community in the greater San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles Area.

Reinstating the football program entails an AS student activity fee of $91 per semester phased in over five years ( e.g. yr1 $30, yr2 $30 + $17 ($47), yr3+ $25 ($72), yr4 +$13 ($85), yr5 + $6 ($91). Upon qualification of this measure, the AS shall create a Matador Pride Fund to disburse revenue to the athletics department, the fee can be adjusted every 3 years not to exceed the CA CPI or 3% of the fee. In addition there is a one time startup fee of $112 per semester in year 1 in addition to the $30 per semester, totaling $142 per semester of year 1 only which, begins this fall of 2013. The one time startup fee will finance two practice fields and football complex. This activity fee would not only finance NCAA mens football, but NCAA women's swimming, crew, lacrosse, and field hockey and scholarships as well also necessary athletic trainers and associate directors that would need to be hired. The main argument for the elimination of the Cal State Northridge Football program in 2001 was overall apathy and a lack of fan support at that time. By signing this petition, we are proving that assumption to be false and no longer valid in today’s climate.

We, the undersigned, plan to support the Cal State Northridge Football program in any way we can. We encourage the California State University, Northridge administration and Associated Students, Inc. to reinstate the football program for competition in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). By signing this petition, we request California State University, Northridge reinstate the Cal State Northridge Football Team to full competitive status within the NCAA. This petition demands that a referendum be set within the time limits designated by the CSUN AS Constitution Article XI. In addition the proposal submitted must be considered when making validity decisions by the SFAC. We also understand that the student vote is legally binding due to the authority of the AS Constitution.
