Trans-forming Accessibility to Medical Treatment and Mental Health Services

Accessing health care is particularly complex for transgender individuals, and the Canadian healthcare system can be unknowledgeable and resistant towards their needs. In 2017, the Ontario HIV Treatment Network did a study which shows that barriers to care have been reported by a number of different populations, including transgender men, transgender women, HIV-positive transgender women, African American HIV-positive transgender women, transgender youth, transgender seniors, as well as others (Barriers to Accessing Health Care Among Transgender Individuals (Ontario HIV Treatment Network, 2017)).
We, the undersigned, call on the Federal Government of Canada to acknowledge the barriers of accessibility to medical treatment and mental health services for transgender people in Canada and help break them down through the Canada Health Act.
