In 1999, the Department of Public Health Sciences supported a Task force on ethno-racial diversity that recommended increasing the ethno-racial diversity of faculty, creating a supportive environment for racialized students, altering curriculum to address race and providing opportunities for research of race as a determinant of health.
*8 years later the recommendations of this report have not been addressed.*
Other schools of public health such as The Harvard School of Public Health have recognized the importance of diversity and have appointed staff to address diversity, support research about health and racialized groups and offer forums where this issue can be discussed.
*As we move towards becoming a School of Public Health, public health should develop a strategic plan addressing ethno-racial diversity.*
We, the undersigned, call on the Department of Public Health Sciences to critically examine and address the lack of ethno-racial diversity of students, faculty, staff and the lack of curriculum that addresses race as a determinant of health and avoids Euro-centrism.
