Dr. Kurien has provided exceptional service to uplift the lives of millions of poor in India and other countries. His vision positively impacted millions of families worldwide.
He did this by applying his technical talents when conventional wisdom was unsure whether such an experiment would succeed. India lost its noble son recently at age 90.
While he has been recognized worldwide, we believe that he deserves the 'Bharat Ratna', India's highest civilian honour.
Dr. Manmohan Singh
Honorable Prime Minister of India
Dear Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh:
We the undersigned would like to humbly request you to consider Dr. Verghese Kurien for a Bharat Ratna award posthumously.
The award,as you are eminently aware, is a recognition of exceptional service/ performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. Dr. Kurien comfortably exceeds that high achievement mark.
In a world of 1950s (before most signers of this petition were born) here was a man with stellar qualifications who gave up all other alluring and risk averse opportunities to select a path that perhaps had very little odds of success. He defied the science of probability and he believed, in all his humility, that even in a newly independent India it was possible. It was possible to bring back smiles to the millions of families in rural India who had seen nothing but misery and abject poverty. It was possible to apply analytical thinking and technology to solve the problems of the downtrodden. It was possible create a model that worked for the common farmer in Gujarat and replicate it not only throughout India but also other countries who needed the know-how. It was possible to go into a unfamiliar part of the country and love and be loved in return. For him, it was always possible.
Then, over the past five decades he made all that he thought possible into reality. A stunningly, successful reality. In the form of Amul, NDDB, IRMA and perhaps some other ventures as well. While many well meaning plans have gone awry, here is one a beacon of Indian ingenuity that no less significant than the path of non-violence that Gandhiji showed. If Gandhiji helped in the birth of a nation, Kurien contributed to sustain its poor, its downtrodden and its marginalized.
While there may be other deserving candidates available to you for consideration, Dr. Kurien is perhaps the only one who utilized his talents and know-how to have such a far reaching impact on millions of families both in India and other countries.
His contributions will remain alive and productive through generations to come, although today India lost one of its noble sons. Even if it posthumous, there is no honour more fitting than ‘Bharat Ratna’ that will come close to acknowledging and celebrating his contributions.
We sincerely thank you for this consideration.
