Roughly 219 school shootings have occurred since 2013 and 18 shootings have happened since the year 2018 started. One of the most recent being in Parkland, Florida at Stoneman Douglas High School. Being one of the worst school shootings in American history. This tragedy has become just another statistic,
and another "bump in the road" . Yet this could have been prevented if not only the students but the faculty stood up to protect one another. With many red flags being presented something should have been done to protect the many lives that were so unfortunately lost. Discussions and awareness is so highly discarded not only in my own school but everywhere around America. In my own personal experience everyday at Thomas Jefferson High school, I see the lack of many things required for a safe environment. We cannot wait any longer for another catastrophic event to unravel inside the walls of our schools.
With approximately 1,278 students enrolled, 71 full time teachers and a 18:1 student-teacher ratio, there are many things wrong with the way something of this matter is so highly discarded. Our school has provided one police officer for all 1,336 people in the school, as well as a "hall monitor" who is placed at the side doors of the main building. We need better protection, procedures, and more faculty to prevent something of this manner. Providing teachers with more optimal training and knowledge of what to do in a situation like this, putting a "buzzer" or security precautions in place to keep track of everyone entering, and leaving the building. Keeping everyone safe should be a number one priority in a school district, yet as a student myself, I feel more and more vulnerable every passing day as we still lack the presence of proper protection.
