On the 30th April 2019 I was denied access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) with the decision maker’s explanation “You have been denied access to the NDIS because you can drive”. This is discrimination.
In 2014, I was diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD), a lifelong, debilitating disease of the skeletal muscles for which there is no treatment or cure, a disease which has affected me throughout my life robbing from me functional capacities in mobility, self-care and self-management.
Based on the Legislative Requirements for NDIS access, combined with the Access Request form completed by my treating health professional I meet the criteria for access to the NDIS, However, I was discriminated against on the sole reasoning that I can still drive a car.
While I meet the access criteria for the Centrelink Disability Support Pension, the inconsistency in disability support services between Government departments requires me to emotionally jump hurdles and through hoops (that physically, I could not manage), just to fight for my human rights.
We the undersigned call on The Hon. Jenny Mikakos: Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services to improve the access pathways to the NDIS for people with disabilities who have already met the criteria for other Government disability support services such as the Centrelink Disability Support Pension.
The emotional and psychological toll in encountering barriers to disability support services can be as debilitating as the disability itself and in some instances significantly impact the person’s quality of life.
The NDIS access requirements needs to be amended to allow for consistency and transparency between Government Disability Support Services that better assist and support people with disabilities.
