From November 1, the Government will limit the number of Medicare rebates patients can claim when they consult a general practitioner who specialises in mental health care.
The 'Better Access' program has been providing patients with up to 18 consultations, but from November 1 this will be limited to 10 consultations for common but disabling problems such as depression and anxiety disorders.
GPs who specialize in mental health care offer easily accessible, affordable help. They can prescribe appropriate medications and offer a range of counselling options for individuals and families.
We the undersigned call on the Federal Minister for Mental Health to re-instate a fair policy for mental health care, namely 12-18 sessions with a trained general practitioner, in the 'Better Access to Mental Health Care' initiative.
