Dear President Obama, I am writing to express my deep concern about the situation in Syria, and to ask for your support. In your speech in May, you said that Bashar Assad could "lead [a] transition ... or get out of the way."
By now it is painfully obvious that he does not intend to allow a transition to democracy or any kind of meaningful change for his people. This, combined with the brutal tactics used by his security forces, makes Bashar Assad unfit to govern.
I therefore respectfully ask that you:
• Join the Syrian people in declaring that the Assad regime has lost its legitimacy;
• Ask the UN Security Council to refer Assad and others who are complicit in his crimes to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to be tried for crimes against humanity; and
• Pressure the Assad regime to allow international media and human rights representatives into Syria.
• Expel the Syrian regime ambassador in Washington D.C. He has been leading many rallies to support murderous regime. You speak often about how our country values the right to freedom and basic human dignity.
At this critical moment for the Syrian people, please do all that you can to put political pressure on the Assad regime to help give the Syrian people a chance to experience real freedom and self-determination.
