Plastic water bottles cause harm to human and environmental health. First of all, human health is affected from plastic chemicals that leach into the water which are known to cause cancer.
Also, environmental health is affected when plastic water bottles are not recycled. In fact, five out of six plastic water bottles are not properly recycled which find their way into landfills or the ocean. Ocean garbage patches have been a result of this problem which are impossible to clean up and the plastic toxins find its way into the food chain.
There is a countless list of problems surrounding plastic water bottles, the worst part is that companies have tricked you into thinking that consuming their water is “cleaner” and more “pure” than water that comes from the tap. The truth is, many bottled water companies simply bottle tap water. That means you're paying for something that you already have for free. Other companies are pumping natural spring water which is already a limited resource.
In some cases plastic water bottles have provided relief to people who lack access to clean water or have suffered from a natural disaster, which is important, but the over consumption of plastic water bottles in everyday life is unnecessary.
Tap water is a safe, healthy choice closely regulated by the EPA and purified by your local water treatment facility. The quality and safety of the water is thoroughly tested many times per day and is virtually free. Drinking tap water and using a reusable bottle is better for your health and is environmentally sustainable. Keep plastic out of our landfills and oceans, cut down on your carbon footprint and choose against the privatizing of our water resources by banning the disposable water bottle from you life, and especially on April 4th.
We’re asking that you ban plastic water bottles for one day on Friday April 4, 2014.
