Oklahomans have seen a dramatic increase in earthquakes, including a recent period when 150 earthquakes and tremors occurred in one week. Numerous quakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher have caused property damage and homeowner stress in the state.
A study regarding the 5.7 magnitude quake in southern Lincoln County in 2011 linked it directly to effects of injection well activity in the area where fracking also was taking place.
For more than 25 years, scientific studies have linked deep well injection of liquid wastes with seismic activity. These studies should be reviewed in light of the fact that since 2009,the dramatic increase in seismic activity in our state has followed an increase in hydraulic fracturing for oil and natural gas.
I support Clean Energy Future Oklahoma in calling for a one year moratorium on deep, high pressure injection well operations in Oklahoma to prevent further earthquake-related property damage.
It may take at least a year of no injection well operations to see if the quake occurrences stop, proving the probable connection between injection wells and damaging earthquakes clustered near hydraulic fracturing sites for oil and natural gas.
