In 2008 the Government, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and leading supermarkets made an agreement to apply a voluntary approach in order to try and cut the number of single use carrier bags handed out by 50% by spring 2009; the Voluntary Carrier Bag Agreement. The target was just missed with a 48% reduction since 2006.
As a campaign group, we believe that more can be done to tackle the issue. It’s time for the Government to take example from Ireland. A 10p levy on plastic bags was introduced in Ireland early in 2002. Within four months, carrier bag usage had fallen by 90% and almost £6m had been raised to pay for environmental improvements.
We, the undersigned, write to The House of Commons to ask you to reduce the amount of paper and plastic bags used within our country, with the hope that in the not too distant future carrier bags of these kind will no longer be an option.
In many people’s eyes paper bags are the answer, however paper bags and plastic bags destroy natural resources and the ecosystem. Both contribute to greenhouse gasses. Please stop this now!
