For several years the grading scheme in the Readings in Arabic Literature course has raised questions regarding its consistency with the university's scheme. Students at the American University of Beirut (AUB) have been complaining about the rule that constrains the professors to follow a specific grading criteria, based on a targeted average rather than on earned merit.
Knowing that the passing grade in AUB is high relatively to other universities, it would be unfair that a required average for a given course be near this average. This old rule has to adapt to the university's requirement so that the earned grade reflects the performance of the student.
We, students of the American University of Beirut, taking the "Readings in Arabic Literature" course, ask the Arabic and Near Eastern Languages department to adapt this rule and allow for a fairer grading scheme that would reflect the students' performance.
