Your Eminence:

Your recent actions and comments have stirred a lot of controversy and led many to question the motives behind your collaboration with one of the most abusive regimes on earth. At best, some think that you have lived far too long under a brutal dictatorship, and like a long-term hostage, can no longer discern the difference between what most of the world considers “normal” and “abnormal” behavior. At worst, some accuse you of aiding the elites who rule Cuba, and of safeguarding their power.

This letter seeks to explain why so many Cubans feel betrayed by you, and why your efforts on behalf of the prisoners have caused more grief than relief.

First and foremost, you have played a key role in stripping Cuba of some of its best citizens, and in ensuring that the current status quo remains unchanged, all in the name of “social harmony.” Yes, working for the release of non-violent prisoners of conscience is an admirable thing, in and of itself. But the sad fact is that none of the dissidents being released from prison through your mediation are really being freed outright, as they deserve. Instead, they are being sent directly from their vermin-infested cells into exile, to a foreign land that does not want to recognize them as political exiles or refugees, and is more interested in dispersing them to remote locations than in offering any genuine assistance. This is not only a violation of their human rights, but also against the social teachings of the Church, which uphold the dignity of every individual, the sanctity of the family, and everyone’s right to freedom of conscience.

Second, the deal you brokered between Raul Castro and Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos was carefully designed to fool the European Union into thinking that genuine reform had finally come to Cuba, and that it was high time for the Europeans to stop badgering the Castro regime about their uncivil behavior. Fortunately, the European Union seems not to have been duped by this trick.

Third, that trip you took to Washington D.C. – something forbidden to all of your flock – was also carefully designed to enhance power of the Castro regime and forestall any genuine reforms. In essence, you flew to Washington to beg for Dollars on behalf of Castro Incorporated. Nothing more, nothing less. For what would be the sole outcome of the lifting of the so-called embargo and of travel restrictions for Americans, but simply an increase in cashflow? Greater openness? Greater freedom? Economic growth? Forget all that. Perhaps you haven’t noticed that the two million tourists from the free world that flood Cuba’s beaches every year have done nothing to improve the political climate or the economic well-being of Cuba.

Fourth, on August 14th, one of your subalterns, Bishop Emilio Aranguren, acted as an agent of the tyrants, suggesting to Reina Tamayo, the grieving mother of Orlando Zapata Tamayo, a woman who has been harassed for months, that she has no right to visit her son’s grave unless she does so alone. Is this the best that “dialogue” can offer? If so, maybe you should think it over. And perhaps you should also think about the fact that it was not Bishop Aranguren who really helped Reina Tamayo, but rather the foreign news media who finally had the courage to flock to her home. The mere fact that they would be there to record the abusive behavior of the Castro regime was enough to dispel the hundreds of aggressors who had prevented her and her friends from going to the cemetery through brute force.

Finally, you have publicly complained about the letter that 165 of your bravest, most honorable Cuban brethren sent to the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, in which they justly complained of your conduct. This response on your part may be the clearest indication that you are truly out of step with the civilized world and Holy Mother Church. You refer to their letter as “offensive.” Yet, these men and women are risking their lives and their well-being, in order to gain true justice for themselves and their fellow Cubans. They are literally offering up their lives for their brethren, in an ultimate act of love (John 15:13). They are the good Samaritans, not the uncaring Pharisee who ignored the wounded man at the roadside. (Luke 10:25-37) Through your spokesman Father Orlando Marquez, you scolded them as ungrateful and said that the Church is working on behalf of the “respect and dignity of all Cubans and the social harmony of Cuba.”

This statement raises a crucial question, Your Eminence: how does the denial of nearly every human right sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church, most civilized nations, and the United Nations lead to “respect” and “dignity”? And this leads to a second question: since when has Holy Mother Church equated brutal atheistic repression with “social harmony?”

The only hint of an answer you have given to such questions is deeply disturbing. You invoke “pastoral” concerns, claiming that you are straining to avoid “political tendencies.” Yet, this dichotomy that you see between pastoral concerns and politics is not only specious, but also contrary to Church teaching and common sense. Your reasoning indicates, above all, that you choose not to accept the political reality in which you and all Cubans live, for wherever tyrants set themselves up as God and Caesar, no one can distinguish between “rendering unto Caesar” and “rendering unto God,” (Mark 12:17). Unfortunately, every act in Cuba, every gesture is a “political tendency,” no matter how sacred or mundane, from receiving the Eucharist to placing food on the table.

Back in the late fourth century, Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan, made no such distinctions. Ambrose repeatedly stood up to the Roman Emperor Theodosius, reprimanding him for wronging his subjects and acting tyrannically. Of course, Theodosius was a Christian, unlike the Castro brothers and their henchmen, so Ambrose had a kind of leverage you can’t ever rely upon. But you do have leverage – una palanca enorme – of your own: eleven million souls who yearn to be free, who will put their bodies at risk, maybe even sacrifice their earthly well-being to ensure freedom for their brethren and their children.

So, Your Eminence, please be our Ambrose. Defend the rights of your flock, who will surely rally to your call, and thank you. In your “dialogue” with the tyrants, please tell them to let your people go, as Moses did to Pharaoh. If you and your clergy were to demand real change, the murderous, soul-crushing regime that has ruled Cuba for fifty-one years would surely collapse in the wink of an eye. You know it. The sainted John-Paul II –he who brought down the Iron Curtain– knows it, in Heaven, along with those two other champions of human rights who grace our history, Fathers Bartolomé de las Casas and Felix Varela. And so do all Cubans, living and dead, saints and sinners alike.

Please be our good shepherd. Stop “dialoguing” with the wolves, and drive them away instead.

Sus acciones y comentarios recientes han causado mucha controversia y ha llevado a muchos a cuestionar los motivos detrás de su colaboración con una de las dictaduras más crueles del mundo. En mejores términos, algunos piensan que usted ha vivido bajo una dictadura brutal por demasiado tiempo, y como rehenes prolongados, usted ha perdido la capacidad de distinguir la diferencia entre lo que el mundo considera conducta “normal” y “anormal”. En peores términos, algunos lo acusan de colaborar con los elites que dominan a Cuba y de respaldar su poder.

Esta epístola intenta explicar el porqué tantos cubanos se sienten traicionados por usted, y la razón por la cual sus esfuerzos en nombre de los prisioneros ha causado más dolor que alivio.

En primer lugar, usted destacó un papel clave en privarle a Cuba unos de sus mejores ciudadanos, y aseguró que el actual statu quo se mantuvo, todo en el nombre de la “armonía social”. Si, luchar por la liberación de prisioneros de consciencia no-violentos es una cosa admirable en sí misma. Pero la triste realidad es que ninguno de los disidentes que fueron liberados de la prisión por la mediación de usted fue liberado indiscutiblemente, como lo merecían. En vez de ser liberados, fueron mandados directamente de sus cárceles inhumanas y asquerosas al exilio, a una tierra ajena que no quiere reconocerlos como exiliados políticos ni refugiados y que está más interesada en dispersarlos a lugares remotos que en ofrecerles asistencia genuina. Esto no es sólo una violación de sus derechos humanos, pero también es contra las enseñanzas de la iglesia, que defiende la dignidad de todos los individuos, la santidad de la familia, y el derecho de la libertad de consciencia de todos.

Segundo, el acuerdo que usted negoció entre Raúl Castro y el ministro español de Asuntos Exteriores Miguel Ángel Moratinos fue cuidadosamente diseñado para engañar a la Unión Europea para que pensaran que la reforma genuina por fin había llegado a Cuba, y que ya era tiempo que los europeos pararan de hostigar al régimen castrista por su comportamiento incivil. Afortunadamente, la Unión Europea no parece ser engañada por esta trampa.

Tercero, el viaje que usted tomó a Washington D.C. — algo que se le prohíbe a su propio rebaño — fue también cuidadosamente diseñado para engrandecer el poder del régimen de los hermanos Castro y prevenir cualquier reforma genuina. Esencialmente, usted viajó a Washington para mendigar dólares en nombre de Castro, Incorporado. Nada más, y nada menos. ¿Cuál fuera el único resultado del levantamiento del supuesto embargo y de las restricciones de viajes en contra de los norteamericanos si no es simplemente para aumentar el flujo de dinero? ¿Más abertura? ¿Más libertad? ¿Crecimiento económico? Olvide todo eso. Quizás usted no se ha dado cuenta de que los dos millones de turistas del mundo libre que inundan las playas de Cuba todos los años no han podido mejorar en ninguna manera el clima político ni el bienestar económico de Cuba.

Cuarto, en el 14 de agosto, uno de sus subalternos, el arzobispo Emilio Aranguren, actuó como agente de los tiranos, sugiriéndole a Reina Tamayo, la madre apenada de Orlando Zapata Tamayo, una mujer que ha sido hostigada por meses, que no tiene el derecho de visitar la tumba de su hijo a menos que vaya sola. ¿Esto es lo mejor que el “diálogo” nos ofrece? Si es así, quizás usted lo debería reconsiderar. Y también debe usted considerar el hecho que no fue la intervención del arzobispo Aranguren que ayudó a Reina Tamayo, sino los periodistas extranjeros que tuvieron el coraje de ir a su hogar. El simple hecho que ellos estuvieron ahí para documentar la conducta abusiva del régimen castrista fue suficiente para ahuyentar a los cientos de agresores que con fuerza bruta le habían impedido su visita al cementerio con sus compañeras.

En fin, usted se quejó públicamente sobre una carta que 165 de los más valientes, más honrados hermanos cubanos le mandaron al Santo Padre, el Papa Benedicto XVI, en que ellos justamente se quejaron de la conducta suya. La repuesta suya quizás puede ser la indicación más clara que usted verdaderamente no está en cuenta con el mundo civilizado y la madre iglesia sagrada. Usted clasificó la carta como “ofensiva”. No obstante, estos hombres y mujeres se están arriesgando sus vidas y su bienestar para obtener justicia verdadera para ellos mismos y sus hermanos cubanos. Literalmente están ofreciendo sus propias vidas por sus hermanos, un acto supremo de amor (Juan 15:13). Ellos son los buenos samaritanos, no los Fariseos indiferentes que ignoraron el hombre lisiado (Lucas 10:25-37). A través de su portavoz, el padre Orlando Márquez, usted los regañó como ingratos, y dijo que la iglesia está trabajando en nombre del “respeto y la dignidad de todos los cubanos, y la armonía social en Cuba”.

Esta declaración suya genera una pregunta crucial: Su Eminencia: ¿Cómo es posible que la carencia de casi todo los derechos humanos sancionada por la Iglesia Católica Romana, casi todos los países civilizados, y las Naciones Unidas, nos lleva a “respeto” y “dignidad”? Y esto nos lleva a una segunda pregunta: ¿Desde cuándo la Madre Iglesia Sagrada ha igualado la represión brutal atea con la “armonía social”?

La única indirecta a una repuesta que usted ha dado a tales preguntas es sumamente turbadora. Usted invoca inquietudes “pastorales”, alegando que usted está luchando para evitar “tendencias políticas”. Pero esta dicotomía que usted ve entre los deberes pastorales y la política no es solamente especiosa, pero a la vez contraria a las enseñanzas de la Iglesia y el sentido común. Su razonamiento indica, sobre todo, que usted elije no aceptar la realidad política en la cual viven usted y el pueblo cubano. Por eso, dondequiera que una tiranía se posicione como Dios y César, nadie puede distinguir entre “den al César lo que es del César, y a Dios, lo que es de Dios" (Marcos 12:17). Desafortunadamente, cada acto en Cuba, cada gesto, es considerado una “tendencia política”, sea algo sagrado o algo mundano, desde comulgar en la iglesia, hasta encontrar suficiente comida para cada día.

En el cuarto siglo, San Ambrosio, Obispo de Milán, no hizo tales distinciones. Ambrosio repetidamente se enfrentó al emperador romano Teodosio, reprimiéndolo por su crueldad y su comportamiento tiránico. Por supuesto, Teodosio era cristiano, distinto a los hermanos Castro y sus esbirros, así que Ambrosio tuvo alguna palanca que usted carece. Pero usted si tiene otra palanca — una palanca enorme — que es suya de veras: once millones de almas que anhelan ser libres, que están dispuestas a arriesgar sus cuerpos y a sacrificar su bienestar en esta tierra para asegurar la libertad para sus hermanos y sus hijos.

Así, su Eminencia, por favor, sea nuestro Ambrosio. Defienda los derechos de su rebaño que seguramente contestarán su llamada, y le darán las gracias. En su “diálogo” con los tiranos, por favor dígales que liberen a su pueblo, como Moisés le dijo al Faraón. Si usted y su clero de veras demandaran un cambio verdadero, el régimen asesino y ateo que ha dominado a Cuba por 51 años seguramente se derrumbaría en un guiño del ojo. Usted lo sabe. El Santo Padre Juan-Pablo II — el que derrumbó la Cortina de Hierro — lo sabe, en el cielo, junto a ese par de ilustres defensores de derechos humanos que son parte de nuestra historia, los Padres Bartolomé de las Casas y Félix Varela. Y lo saben también todos los cubanos, vivos y muertos, santos y pecadores.

Por favor, sea nuestro buen pastor. Deje de “dialogar” con los lobos, y expúlselos.
