In Saint Lucie County, the push for collared shirts began heavily in 2006-2007. This was my 7th grade year in middle school. An article was written in April of 2006 covering this topic (Link for the article http://findarticles.com/p/news-articles/palm-beach-post/mi_8163/is_20060425/st-lucie-schools-pushes-dress/ai_n51914184/ ).

In this Article written by SANDRA HONG from the Palm Beach Post, it explains that Superintendent Michael Lannon wanted to implement new dress code policies for all the schools in Saint Lucie County. His proposals were passed and the new dress code came into effect for the 2006-2007 school year. Among the various new dress code rules implemented, there is one in particular that stands out. Its the rule that all students are obliged to wear collared shirts. One of the main controversies of the dress code policy that was added in the 2006-2007 school year, was the freedom of expression that was taken from students by forcing all students to wear collared shirts. Many students were and are still against this dress-code policy.

Collared shirts should NOT be the only type of shirt that is allowed in are school system here in Saint Lucie County. Most dress code rules have a strong reasoning behind them, such as "Tucking in of shirts" which is applied due to safety hazards. That rule has a real reasoning behind it, where as collared shirts really don't. Being allowed to wear crew neck t-shirts will not effect much of our dress-code, and it will only have a positive impact. Females wearing Crew neck t-shirts show no cleavage, likewise, there will be much less suspensions and written referrals in our schools. With reduced ISS and OSS in our schools, students will spend more time in school learning rather then being separated from their classrooms & falling behind on classwork/homework.

Furthermore, this should NOT effect a student's ability to perform work in classrooms. If you look up High schools in Vero beach county and Martin County, you will notice that they allow their students to wear crew neck t-shirts and they have A & B rated schools. To reiterate, I feel that students should have the right to wear Crew neck t-shirts in Saint Lucie county Schools.

We, the undersigned, call on the Saint Lucie county school board to allow Students in the Saint Lucie county schooling area to wear Crew Neck T-shirts in our Public schools."

We understand the need for a dress code, but feel that students should be allowed the choice to wear either crew neck T-shirts or collared shirts to school, rather then just Collared shirts. The limitations to the crew neck shirts shall be the same limitations set forth for collared shirts (such as graphics/writing). The first amendment includes our freedom of expression, and by allowing students to wear crew neck t-shirts it will give the student body more opportunities to freely express themselves in an appropriate manner.

Crew neck T-shirts prevent female students from showing cleavage, and in addition it allows less students to be suspended or written up for dress code violations. We do not feel that by allowing students to wear crew neck T-shirts that they will lose out in their education.

High schools such as those found in Vero Beach county allow their students to wear Crew neck T-shirts and they are indeed some Highly graded educational schools. Please consider our request, and evaluate this fully.
