Thanks to everyone who signed and supported the campaign.
The rules to participate in an Ironman/Ironman 70.3 event require shoes on the bike and run portion of the competition.
We, the undersigned, petition that the rule requiring shoes on the bike and run portions of the triathlon be removed.
As barefoot athletes we train year round without shoes. Most of us have come to barefoot training due to injuries. There is scientific evidence as well as growing antidotal evidence of a decrease in injuries while barefoot. An athlete who trains year round barefoot and then participates in a race wearing shoes increases their chances of injury.
Barefoot athletes are very mindful of their body and safety. Proper form and mindfulness are essential to minimize injury.
Each athlete is already required to sign a waiver that holds IM North America harmless in case of injury. Please allow us to participate barefoot. We would gladly provide the board with additional documentation as needed to substantiate our request. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this issue that is very important to barefoot athletes.
