Grand Blanc High School, like many other schools, has long given students over the age of 18 permission to sign themselves out of school. This has been convenient when students feel ill, an emergency arises, or if the student has an appointment to report to.
This is especially important if a parent is not available to confirm that the student is to be let leave campus, which is often a problem. However, on Wednesday February 25th 2009, Principal Jennifer Hammond announced to the student body that 18 year old students would no longer be permitted to sign themselves out of school.
This decision arose after witnessing one student trying to sign out of school one hour before school was dismissed. Although this student had an outstanding grade point average and a history of being an exceptional student, she insisted he return to class and quickly changed the rule that had been in place for many years.
These students are adults and should be treated as such, starting with returning their right to sign themselves out of school.
We, the undersigned, call on the Superintendent and Administration of Grand Blanc High School to give back the adult students of Grand Blanc High School the right to sign themselves out of school.
