On November 8, 2013 the Government of Alberta proclaimed Bill 207 calling for the creation of a provincial agency to coordinate all aspects of organ and tissue donation in the province. We commend the Government of Alberta on setting up an online 'intent to donate' registry in April 2014 as a first step.
Other provinces have made significant improvements to their organ & tissue donation rates through provincial agencies that address all aspects of the donation and transplantation process.
As a province that has one of the lowest donation rates in Canada, it is imperative that the Government of Alberta implement the Agency as a means to:
- Deliver a provincial campaign that addresses the need for organ and tissue donation
- Explain how the intent-to-donate registry works
- Identify what organs and tissues can be donated
- Address myths and perceived objections to donation.
Albertans continue to suffer from a severe shortage of donated organs and tissues.
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Alberta to follow through with implementation of an Organ and Tissue Donation Agency, prescribed in the Alberta Human Tissue and Organ Donation Amendment Act, as a means to increase awareness and understanding of the need for organ and tissue donation.
