Originally The Charlotte Mason Teacher Training College, and formerly St Martin’s University College, The University of Cumbria, Ambleside has long provided an outstanding faculty for both Teacher Training and Outdoor Studies in the heart of the English Lake District.

Despite previously guaranteeing the future of undergraduate courses at the Ambleside campus, The University of Cumbria has now proposed to discontinue undergraduate courses at Ambleside, instead transferring two thirds of the education faculty to Carlisle, the remaining third to Lancaster and the Outdoor Studies faculty entirely to Newton Rigg, and using the facilities at Ambleside for postgraduate and short courses. This then frees up the College’s extensive properties (Including Student halls of residence, Hilltop – Outdoor Studies faculty building) for sale.

Not only will the removal of undergraduate courses in Ambleside destroy the reputation of Education in Ambleside, but the removal of undergraduate courses also ensures the economic foundations of Ambleside will be shaken as the current student population not only contributes greatly to the local economy, not only financially, but also in terms of employment, as a high proportion of students seek part time employment during their time in Ambleside.

Please help ensure the continuation of undergraduate education in Ambleside by signing this e-petition.

We, the undersigned, express our opposition to the proposed termination of undergraduate teacher training (BA Education) and outdoor studies (BA/BSc Outdoor Studies) at the University of Cumbria, Ambleside campus.
