Hackney Council has threatened to take over the management of Broadway's Saturday Market from the local community.
Since the Broadway Market Traders' and Residents' Association set it up three years ago the Saturday Market has become the most successful community-run market in the country.
Hackney Council admits that the performance of its own markets department has been unacceptable. The Councillor in charge of the Borough’s markets, Alan Laing, told a public meeting last month: “The market service has not been up to scratch and for that the council apologises.”
We, the undersigned, wish the BMTRA to continue managing Broadway Market.
