The AFL was formed in 1990 as the Australian Football League, NOT the VFL. States like SA and WA had their own strong competitions, but with the drain on players heading east to prop up the VFL both states were left with a decision to make and decided a national competition was the best way forward for the future of Australian Rules.
Why is it then that a competition in one state, mainly Victoria continually refer to the history books prior to the AFL competition?
As this competition has absolutely nothing to do with the previous competition with regards to Grand Finals played in etc do the media continue to refer to the old competition that no longer exists. It is now time after 25 years of AFL to draw on the history of the current competition.
We non Victorians have no interest in how many grand finals Collingwood won or who kicked the most goals in 1921, this is OUR competition now, it is called the Australian Football League it is no longer the VFL.
To the commissioner of the Australian Football League, we the undersigned respectfully request you take a moment to consider the above request on behalf of all AFL supporters to truly accept that as of 1990 the VFL as we knew it no longer has any ties or history in the current game as we know it today.
We have had 25 years of our own history to draw on for stats of any type that involves this great game as we know it today.
Can you please help to make this game a truly national game and not one that was purely a Victorian based competition and inform the media outlets that those of us from other states only want comparisons drawn from the competition as we have known and loved since the AFL was formed in 1990.
