Substance abuse and addiction is a concentrated issue along the border. For example, "because El Paso is located on the Mexican border, drug trafficking is a serious problem in the city," said by www.addictioncenter.com. Heroine seizures have steadily increased along the Southwest border from roughly 200 kilograms in 2000 to 2,200 in 2014. Methamphetamine seizures have also increased, by more than 400%, from 2009 to 2014. 8.7 percent of Texans have admitted to using illicit drugs in the past month as of 2011, and 6.71 percent of Kansans in 2009-2010. My mission is to bring these numbers down, by creating more addiction recovery programs near the border and elsewhere, along with properly disposing of the substances seized by Border Patrol. I will first start a petition, but I hope to be able to work at the border first-hand soon.
We call on the Border Patrol to properly dispose of the substances they have seized, and to create more recovery programs for the addiction caused by said substances.
