The Army is selling its Fort Lawton property, which is surrounded on 3 sides by Discovery Park. The Army appointed the City of Seattle to propose a plan for use of the property.
The City:
- Devised a plan to build over 200 units of housing, of which 88 are for low-to-no-income residents
- Hired consultants to conduct "outreach", the goal being to shut down any opposition
- Repeatedly ignored requests by the local community to develop other options for the land use
- Dismissed the Discovery Park Master Plan, which explicitly states that the property should be acquired and added to Discovery Park.
We, the undersigned, call on the City of Seattle to honor the Discovery Park Master Plan, which was adopted by City leaders in 1986 and has been quoted in many City ordinances since.
The City should re-start the BRAC process, allowing for participation by local community groups, and develop alternative options for the site, which should focus on a Parks use of the property.
