A cecostomy is used for patients that have been diagnosed with severe fecal disorders (functional constipation, Hirschsprung's disease, anorectal malformation, spinal abnormalities).
Surgical construction of an opening into the CECUM with a tube through the ABDOMINAL WALL (tube cecostomy) or by skin level approach, in which the cecum is sewn to the surrounding PERITONEUM. Its primary purpose is decompression of colonic obstruction.
The patient is hooked up with a gravity flow system that flushes out the bowel on a daily bases. The process takes 1-2 hours daily.
Wilson was born July 26th 2007 with Hirschsprung's disease, at 10 days old he had his first operation(pull through). Many kids born with HD only need the pull through then they go on to live normal lives. Unfortunately that wasn't the case for Wilson. He suffered with constipation for the next few years. He had botox treatments and they helped for a little bit but it wasn't enough. After he had his colonic motility study done it showed that is bowel had very little muscle tone.
The next step for Wilson was to get a cecostomy. In January of 2012 Wilson had his cecostomy put in, as scary as it was I knew our life was going to change forever. Little did I know it was going to be for the better. Wilson at this point was 4 years old and had very little vocabulary, wore size 3 weighed about 30lbs had no interest in eating had a bowel movement 2 times a month! yes I said a MONTH! With in a couple weeks everything changed. Wilson learned to love food, started to talk and grow and best of all he started to poop. EVERY DAY! But because cecostomy isn't on the list for devices covered with ADP, everything is paid out of pocket. They only cover Colostomy and ileostomy.
