Over the last 20 years, there has been a drastic increase in the number of prisons run by private companies. Our prison system should NOT be run by private companies.
Due to the fact that they are profit driven, they lack the right motives. Consequently, they fail to create an environment conducive to rehabilitation and create a lapse in inmate care.
Furthermore, privatizing is fiscally irresponsible and a burden on taxpayers. It costs the state more money in the long run, since private companies lobby for longer prison sentences. Only the government should run and operate our corrections system.
We, the undersigned, call on the United States Federal Government to pass a bill prohibiting the practice of prison privatization.
