Despite overwhelming professional objection, in August 2006 DECS directed that the then Federal Liberal Government’s flawed A-E reporting system be implemented in South Australia.
When teachers and Principals took a strong stance and refused to assign A-E grades, DECS took the matter to the Industrial Relations Commission of SA to force educators to go against their professional judgement and to lift the bans on implementing A- E grades.
Dear Minister Lomax-Smith,
I am strongly opposed to the assigning of A to E grades as I believe it overrides the professional judgement of our teachers and is potentially damaging to young children.
There is substantial national and international evidence which backs the professional judgement of our educators. This reporting system could jeopardise children’s love of learning by potentially branding them failures, is less sophisticated than existing reporting methods, and is out of step with the curriculum
