MPs today joined the row over the £400,000 logo for the London 2012 Olympics, claiming the "childish" effort had brought "widespread ridicule".

In a Commons early day motion, Tory Philip Davies (Shipley) attacked the design as a "pathetic attempt to appear trendy" and called for it to be scrapped.

The cost was a "spectacular waste of money" and could deter firms from sponsoring the Games, he added.

The motion follows news that an online petition against the logo had been closed after its organiser conceded the design was "here to stay".

But, in two days, 48,615 people had added their names to it.

Meanwhile it was disclosed yesterday that at least 22 people experienced seizures after watching an animated film promoting the 2012 Olympics shown at the logo's launch on Monday.

Leeds-based Epilepsy Action said one person vomited after seeing the flashing multi-coloured footage and another five complained of migraines.

Today Mr Davies said: "The new logo for the 2012 Olympics is childish, ridiculous and a pathetic attempt to appear trendy and brings the London Olympics, which should be an event of great national pride, into disrepute."

He added that the cost had "been a spectacular waste of money and may deter companies from sponsoring the Olympics, given the widespread ridicule of the logo they would be able to use".

Mr Davies urged replacement of the logo with "something more appropriate which would command public support and pride".

His motion has so far been signed by three other MPs. A London 2012 spokesman said ditching the design is "not an option", whatever the strength of public feeling.

He added that Olympics organisers were in contact with the company that produced the film.

The firm, which was responsible for Monday's launch event but did not design the new logo, told 2012 chiefs it would not cause any problems.

The internet petition against the design - found at www.gopetition.co.uk/online/12539.html - must be signed by 5am today.
