Not only the railway connection but the Flanagan and Allen one too. Yet there is no history reference, blue plaque or even a board to tell visitors how important this place is. I remember it being restored in the 70's and it was a joy to walk under it on my way to school. Now, the sight of it breaks my heart

Mr Martin Sims, Derby, Derbyshire, United Kingdom
I can remember this line in operation before closure (something which should never have been allowed to happen). BR deliberately curtailed the services west of Derby to cripple the line. That apart, the Friargate bridge is an outstanding public example if Derby's industrial achievements and history. Very much skill, expertise, and effort were needed/used in making that bridge. It is a worldwide symbol of Derby. It would be a worldwide shame on this town (and those governing it) if it were to be demolished. Britain is sadly the odd country out, in Europe, when it comes to our building heritage. There is (e.g.) the shameful neglect of the Great Northern goods warehouse (which would make an ideal shopping mall), and the neglect (& internal vandalism) of Allestree hall. Look at Berlin, Warsaw, Vienna, & Prague for example. No deliberate destruction of heritage there, only masses of beautiful historic architecture for all to see. But here in England we only get heritage destruction, followed by architectural trash such as the assembly rooms, the Quad, & the current excuse for a Midland station. (the older, proper one having been demolished against public opinion) so Derby's "Railway Triangle" now only has 2 real corners, with just a "box" propping up the other. No more destruction. Restore Friargate bridge.

Mr, Tony Ruff, Derby, United Kingdom
For over a 100 years Derby was one of the most important centres of foundry activity in the world. Before their acrimonious closures Qualcast and Ley's were the largest foundries of their kind in Europe and along with the likes of Rolls-Royce and Parker Foundry etc inherited the specialised skills and culture left by their Victorian forbears. Andrew Handyside and his Britannia Foundry were not merely bridge builders, they were architectural artists and masters of their ironworking crafts. Their products are cherished in cities worldwide and Derby should be ashamed that it has permitted this beautiful and unique civic treasure to be so badly neglected.

This is a good time to do it as the city is clearly going through a spectacular revival.

Derby has lost so many beautiful buildings over the last 40 years. Furthermore, this lovely, ornate bridge spans one of the oldest streets in Derby and is adjacent to some elegant Georgian buildings with a raised pavement leading up to impressive doorways of individual designs.

Hence to let it decay, as is happening, will deprive Derby in the future of an asset of ever increasing value, both culturally and economically.
