All parents of babies who are stillborn or who die after birth should be offered the chance, ideally more than once, to see and hold their baby.

Parents should be informed that for the great majority of people, this is an experience which will result in positive memories of their child.

Parents who do not wish to have contact with their baby should not be made to feel unusual or be overly encouraged against their will.

It should be explained to parents that they may change their mind at any time and they should not be made to unusual if this is what they decide.

Every effort should be made by staff to facilitate the parents time with their baby, so that it is special, unhurried and personal.

I was lucky to hold him as soon as he was born. I was also lucky to have him with me in my hospital room for as often as I liked before I was discharged. At first the thought of holding a dead baby scared me but I am so glad the midwife encouraged me and gave me the support to do so. I know I would have regretted if for the rest of my life.
