If Facebook messenger and whatsapp didn't exist I would not have been able to keep in touch as well as I did with my family and partner. it costs a lot to buy add ones for texts abroad and using messenger over wifi meant I could tell them I love them every day. It also was how I found out my Gran was dying. If I didn't have messenger on that particular trip there is no way I would have been able to know. If you ban these I can tell you that you with be an even more unpopular party. There are many books and films that I could compare to this situation such as Orwells '1984' for a start and I have a feeling it's going to be the start of a slippery slope.
