Not enough care has been given to using brown field sites. Not enough serious thought has been given to putting enough infrastructure in before anything else is developed. No thought has been given to the aesthetics of the existing areas and no appreciation is evident of the wishes of the local people who have a right to be interested in the whole future of their environment.
There is very poor infrastructure at the moment. Roads are not only inadequate, but dangerous, schools are totally overcrowded & staff in schools & hospitals well below the necessary requirements due partly to the extremely high prices of the current housing. The majority of the homeless we see are in the lowest financial bracket & yet any houses I see being built around here appear to be very highly priced. They would not suit the exiting homeless but probably only be suitable for more commuters to move out from London where house prices are impossible. This fact will put an even greater burden on the local transport system, let alone schools & hospitals.
Then there is the question of the additional planning applications to the East of Braintree, the fulfilment of which would entail putting even more pressure on those same transport routes. There appears to be no joined up thinking here. If added up the requested number of houses for North Essex comes to approximately 18% of the necessary rehousing of the total number of homeless throughout the country. I have done some maths. This surely is a totally disproportionate number for this part of the county to bear.
Then of course is the other problem that would arise, that of historic Andrewsfield and acres of wonderful countryside being lost. Villages would have their nature changed & environmentally precious havens would be lost FOREVER. Once gone you can never get any of this back.
I am in my mid 70s so this is unlikely to affect me and I am definitely someone who appreciates that we must forever move forward & changes must happen. This, however is not the way forward. In my opinion the whole planning situation in the north of the county should be returned to the drawing board to be re-assessed by more caring, innovative thinking people who are not just saying yes to the demands of a central government, who in turn appear not to have given the whole situation the right kind of thought in the first place.

Also Andrewsfield Airfield has a fantastic history to it helping out in the war as an air-force base and still has aircraft flying in and out each day. For the number of houses required this would have been 30-40 houses per site and spread over a wide area, Smaller developments tend to be better looked after with less social problems and integrated better into the surrounding area. They also would spread the traffic and pressure on other services. Instead Braintree Council have opted to place all the housing in one area which has no infrastructure and where the net flow of traffic towards Chelmsford is already constrained. Furthermore the area is one of outstanding natural beauty and has an active airfield sited within it. Andrewsfield Airfield is not a disused brownfield site ripe for development but a thriving amenity providing flying training, engineering support and recreation for the public. It has strong links with professional flight training and general aviation and is situated in a strategically important location that cannot be simply relocated due to the neighbouring Stansted Airspace. It provides a vital base from where young people can develop careers around aviation.

The traffic movements generated from this proposal cannot even come close to complying with local planning and highways policies. You only have to look to how the road networks around Chelmsford grind to a halt on a daily basis at peak times due to the additional development which has taken place there. And to put the scale of the proposed West of Braintree development into perspective, bear in mind that the new Beaulieu Park extension numbers "only" 3,600 houses, one quarter the size of what's being proposed here.
