As a survivor of a head-on collision, I feel it is the idiots behind the wheel that are the real danger. Removing all trees are likely to encourage the speedsters as they will feel absolutely no fear at all.

2. What about “Global Warming”? Unnecessary clearing of trees, that we are told are so important in preventing Global Warming. Shouldn’t the government be showing the example of preserving our nature, not destroying it because a few people lost their lives. If anything is to be banned, ban the cars, trucks, busses etc.

3. I have not seen any details of the accidents that caused the decision to clear the trees, which really makes one wonder if it is the real reason for clearing the roadside to such an extent. What percentage of accidents were caused by trees? Were the drivers of the vehicles involved obeying the law? Not using mobile phones, speeding, falling asleep etc. No amount of tree clearing will save those idiots, they will always find something to run into.

4. Removing the trees only means suckers to be dealt with. An ongoing cost.

5. Please tell us the real reason for the tree clearing.

On the 26th January 2015 at Nerimbera a vehicle left the road and struck a shed, critically injuring a man working in the shed. This incident shows the flawed logic in the roadside side clearing proposal. Trees may have in fact saved injuries to the person going about their lawful business instead of being mowed down by a vehicle, as well as causing damage to his property. This is not the first time incidents like this have occurred and is no fault of wild life, who we must maintain corridors for also.

Multiple research sources addressing roadside determinants on driver safety (e.g Monash Uni) all stress that while trees impact safety so too does the condition of the roadside, which in this case is extremely rough and uneven for much of its length, undermining the argument that the clear zone allows vehicles time to reenter the roadway. I recommend a more considered approach that utilizes barriers, and targets only max hazard areas.
