In addition cutting a place of delivery of such a specialized service like therapeutic riding program can virtually not be replaced even with some funds designated for it, as it requires therapeutic milieu, experienced staff and expertise that only can be developed over the years. Cutting publicly funded programs in the past, such as specialized mental health services within psychiatric hospital system (such as psychosocial rehabilitation, intensive assessment unit and earlier neuropsychiatry unit) resulted in so far irreversible loss of access to this type of mental health care, in spite of promises that this type of care would be delivered in more general setting. Irreversible decline of therapeutic riding capacity would be the most likely outcome, one of many negative outcomes of closure of NNEP. I write to urge the Mayor's support of the creative solution of the Friends of the Park to run and possibly expand the services and programs available currently at NNEP.

Participants (over 400 riders in 2009, 2010 and 2011) have remarked at how fantastic and accommodating the NNEP has been to our cycling community. In fact, our club plans to submit the NNEP as part of our bid for the National championship venue in 2013.

I believe the city of Ottawa should look for ways to expand the recreational possibilities of the equestrian park (while maintaining its more tranquil equestrian heritage) - e.g., cross country skiiing, cross country running etc. Very few cities are lucky enough to have such a wonderful facility that introduces the general public to horses and riding within its confines - I hope and believe the leaders of Ottawa can find ways to meet the fiscal expectations of the voting public without closing the NNEP.

City Councillor Mark Taylor has said that running an equestrian facility isn’t a core city service however I was under the impression the City of Ottawa was trying to foster a sense of community and belonging in its citizens. The City of Ottawa puts large sums of money towards community centers that are supposed to bring communities together and so I find it odd that the City wants to take money away from a facility that has in fact accomplished this. The NNEP is an amazing place, an amazing stable, an amazing facility, an amazing community and an amazing home to all who ride, board and teach there. Please, don’t ruin what I consider to be one of the City of Ottawa’s biggest successes in bringing together a community.

It not only means lost jobs and loss of home for all of the beautiful equine creatures, but it also means a complete loss of facility and training for a sport that builds character, confidence and respect of animals. The NEP could have been a profitable center, instead the city let it become run down. The instructors gave me self confidence and the horses someone to talk to who will always listen. The threatened closing of the NNEP has broken my heart as I'm sure that it has broken many others. Please save this wonderful facility, it would mean more than the world to a lot of people who are fully dedicated to this barn and its riding programs.

NNEP is where I discovered my passion for horses. It would be terrible if other children no longer had the chance to experience this as well. NNEP is a wonderful riding school with amazing horses. Each and every horse is special and taught me something that I could not have learned otherwise. My cousin currently takes riding lessons at NNEP and I know she would be devistated if it closed down. We have both formed such strong relationships with the horses and the instructors. I have always felt instantly comfortable and at home when I walk through the doors of NNEP. Losing NNEP would be like losing my second home. I have so many good memories attached to NNEP and I cannot imagine it being shut down. Therefore I sincerely hope that NNEP will continue to be around for a long time yet.

"Selling out" is merely a short-term solution and selling this fantastic facility will not even begin to repair the economic problems the City of Ottawa faces. Once this facility is lost due to privatization it will be lost forever. The BIG PICTURE needs to be seen here and the people making decisions about this need to have the courage to stand up to the accountants in the finance dept who are only using cold logic and trying to "rationalize" with their heads rather than hearing their own hearts and the true desires and needs of the tax-paying community. Privatization would be a very self-ish, fear-based economic move on the part of the City's finance deptartment and is not even close to being the solution here. And I hope the city is not caving in to the desires of a private buyer. The solution is to try to make this work and perhaps HELP the Nepean National Equestrian Park to promote and market their unique programming so that it will become self-sustainable.

This is a national treasure, a point of pride, and a therapeutic oasis in a crowded city. I can't believe that this institution does not deserve funding for the recreational benefits it offers, or at least an opportunity to restructure it's operations to be more cost effective.
The spurious and underhanded way that this was done leads me to suspect that there are big money interests behind the decision that have no concern for the residents of this city. Perhaps in a city that has expanded to it's limits, this patch of land is just too "valuable" to compete with the non-monetary value of children learning to connect with nature.
Ottawa will lose much more than money if this institution is abandoned.
