We are no longer the quiet little tourist town, full of what brought people here in the first place. Catering to the rich and tourist has ruined the beauty we once had and they have moved further and further north to find the solace they are looking for. Car lots, banks and strip malls half empty now line the roads that were once woods. The telltale sign that you were almost at the cabin is gone, rustic family cabins that lined the shores are now all sold, knocked down and filled with resorts and condos. The lakes are over polluted, over populated and fished and the up north feeling is gone. For once put the greed and lined pocket books take the back seat. You may see a flooded ditch but to me and many more it is a staple of our childhood, the last little bit of sanctuary for the locals that have lived here their whole life.

1) Wetlands protect water quality by trapping sediments and retaining excess nutrients and other pollutants such as heavy metals.
2) They provide Flood Protection.
3) Shoreline Stabilization. The wetland plants act as a buffer zone by dissipating the water's energy and providing stability by binding the soils with their extensive root systems.
4) They provide Groundwater Recharge and Streamflow Maintenance.
5) They also provide Fish and Wildlife Habitat.

A partially filled or otherwise damaged wetland is one that only partially meets its potential for flood control, shoreline stabilization, or groundwater recharge. A badly degraded wetland can lose its capacity to remove excess sediments, nutrients, and other pollutants, and can lose its habitat value for fish and wildlife. Wetlands may have tremendous capacities to provide environmental benefits, but they are not indestructible. If we want wetlands to continue to perform their ecological functions, then we have to do our part to protect them.

This is one of the last wild, undeveloped and important wetlands on an otherwise heavily commercialized lake. Mr. Harstad is all about money and doesn't care about the importance of the wetlands, which are much more valuable for the future generations than some cookie cutter houses put up by a developer. Barstad has fought many court battles around the state using his money to destroy natural areas and turn them into useless suburbia to line his pockets. We need to stop some of the useless development in the lakes area to preserve what is left, otherwise this area will turn into the metro area many people are trying to escape when they visit East Gull Lake. I am very opposed to the development proposed by Harstad on Squaw Point Road. Doesn't the DNR have some rules against destroying wetlands for development. If they do... I guess money is what talks in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

These 27 units would be more homes than there are on the entire Squaw Point peninsula. As a lakeshore home owner, I can state that the city has been very strict with all of us lakeshore home owners so I cannot understand why they would allow someone to suddenly create this 27 unit development. It seems hypocritical. The DNR never should have granted a permit. If the city of East Gull Lake goes through with this then they are contributing to the problem that the DNR started.

I don't think a large development, as proposed, would be of benefit to anyone except the people who would be lining their pockets at the cost of the environment and the peace and quiet enjoyment of the current residents. it would be crowded, noisy, and taxing on community services. It would amount to an urban sprawl not conducive to the area remaining a tourist local, which is a source of income for many small businesses in the area. All in all the development would be a mistake.

I took horseback riding lessons and became an avid horse and outdoors person. This area was paramount in my development into a well rounded, respectful and conservative adult. Once you change an area to what has been proposed it can not be taken back to what it was. It would be a shame to take the opportunity away from other young children who are and will grow up near this area, to be exposed to what I and so many others were when we were kids.
