I was pleased to see that Sandwich had opportunities for all youth including organized sports as well as a skate park. Having worked with high school students for the majority of my career I understand the need for an outlet for the skaters. In a time where we are looking at such a high opiod use and substance abuse among our youth and young adults why would we ever think of removing a physical outlet that so many of our kids enjoy. Don't we have an obligation to resolve the reasons it was closed rather than to put our heads in the sand and take away an option appreciated by many of our young adults?

The best skateparks are made with quickcrete and painted with graffiti, just look at FDR (like you even know what that is). It also helps when the locals kill it, which is surprising since the park itself was pretty lackluster. Concrete from a catalog. There's not much architecture in Sandwich either, but SSP locals somehow made up for having nothing to ride by being really good at riding (and skating). They made the park their own to make up for the town's lack of investment in their collective futures. I lived in Falmouth briefly and every couple days I'd make the drive because I knew I would progress if I rode there. I also made a lot of good friends and memories.
The town's move to demolish of SSP is about as productive as bulldozing a shantytown. A "get off my lawn" to the youth of Sandwich and anyone who has ever rode or skated there.

If you destroy the skatepark, then skaters will just skate in other spots in the city and if you refuse to let them skate in spots in the city, then they will have nowhere to skate! It anyways costs much more money to pay for tools and utilities to demolish a skatepark, rather than just save money by leaving the park as it is.

The skateboarding and BMX riding communities are comprised of incredibly supportive, inspiring and active young people. A skatepark is a center for these young talents to network. I know many riders who credit their lifelong friendships and the start of their creative careers to their experiences at local skateparks and a few locals have even gone on become professional riders. The young kids of Sandwich deserve a better skatepark than what they`ve been given. But, without a plan for improvements or for a new park, these kids will be forced to find other areas throughout the town that may not be suitable for riding. In order for a future park to be successful, you will need to engage with professionals and local teens on how to build a proper park that is both safe and fun for the riders. If you do not consult them, they will be compelled to make modifications and the new park will be another "failed experiment” within years of opening. You do not need to tear down the existing park. Instead, you could save the town money and ask these passionate young people about what makes a skatepark successful and how implement these changes.

And to say it's because of "vandalism" and "graffiti" is preposterous. The only people it bothers are those who don't use the facility. Hyannis just removed it's indoor/private skatepark and now Sandwich will be destroying their public/outdoor skatepark. This is going to result in a lot more kids skating in your streets and at your schools. Is that really what you want? Because nobody is going to stop Skateboarding. Ever.

So many amazing people I'll never forget so many unbeleavable memories, and I worked hard to make that place better every time I went through those gates. I know it's not perfect but compared to when I started going there it's only been going up. The number of kids coming around being riffraff are going down and the level skill in the park Is going up. I met all of my friends here. I've literally laughed, cried, and grew up here. We have been threatened, as long as I can recall, that the town wanted to destroy the skatepark. However, to many individuals, this is home, this is our place of freedom. This is our history. To bulldoze sandwich skatepark would be to destroy that history and destroy the future of other children growing up with great memories. This would be a foolish act that only hinders the culture of the town of sandwich.

I started bmx when I was 13 and met some of my best friends there. Rode every day. Yelled at those who trashed the place. Would have loved to see the park improve but this place still means a lot to people. This kept me out of trouble and because of the sport met tons of amazing people. The park need to stay and police need to visit more often for more visible patrol which can deter a lot of issues.
