There is no need for it to be demolished and the money to repair it will not come from the public purse. Furthermore, the Diocesan plans are unlikely to attract much use. Opposition to the proposals seems motivated by concerns over the financial viability of the developer, rather than over the principle of what is being proposed. This is unhealthy and wrong.
The Church has proven to be a poor owner of this building for the past 20 years and there is a sense of "no idea is a good idea unless it is mine", coupled with "if I can't have then no one can have it" in the opposition to the Colchester & North East Essex Building Preservation Trust / Cottee proposals. This is small minded and disappointing. The poll of local parishioners clearly shows people want the building to be retained.
In short, the arguments in favour of keeping the building are overwhelming.

My grandparents are buried there and I would welcome any plan to keep the church and their graves intact. I have found it frustrating that I have been unable to visit their graves for many years due to the state of the building.

My grandmother, Kathleen Hilda Poles, played the organ at the church for many years (and at Layer Breton Church) well into her 80s when she would cycle there and back. She left money for the upkeep of the church in her will. She was a founder member of Birch W.I. and organised many events related to music and dance, having been a dance and piano teacher. She also helped deliver meals on wheels to elderly residents well into her 80s.

My grandfather, Dr Henry Gordon Poles, was a GP in the village for decades and delivered many babies there; villagers have fond memories of him and my grandmother.

One of the most significant architects of his day designed it; Samuel Sanders Teulon in 1850.
It's soaring spire is a landmark of the area -and it has a spiritual tranquility despite its decay. Wildlife and stunning countryside surround it- many villagers visit the churchyard- walking to the woods beyond or visit the graves of ancestors.
From many villages around it represents what is quintessentially British about our heritage and culture. It needs preserving. I called the Diocese in Chelmsford saying I would like to take on the renovations and was told I had to prove I had £1 million pounds. Surely anyone who wanted to make an offer can renovate with the collateral they can raise. I would try anything to protect this beautiful, sacred building. Please help us. It would be devastating to the landscape if it was gone.

It was an integral part of the school and an attractive land mark for the village. It is a shame that it has been empty for so long and hasn't found a community use but coveting it yo a house would be significantly better than demolishing it

A church is a central heritage building to its locality and to its community to which generations of families have emotional, ancestral, historic and heritage links. Birch Church has the backing of English Heritage, the VS, the AMS and the LA for its conservation. It is the Govt's duty to uphold the Listed status and continue to protect the Church from demolition and no doubt, the future sale of the land by the Church for more profitable ends. It is also the Govt's duty to allow the conservation of Birch Church for future generations and the current conservation proposal along with other proposals should be considered and supported by Govt alongside the Heritage agencies.
