The reasons given were weak to say the least. To describe the X 33 as a "glorified fuel tank" was meaningless and that it was a waste of the 1.5 billion dollars that had been spent on it. I beg to differ! The shuttle is estimated to have cost around 200 billion throughout it's lifetime. The British based Skylon project states without any shame that it's single stage reusable plane will require an estimated 8 billion.

It's key role in the construction of the ISS developed much experience in the construction of large structures in space. Another argument that should be raised is that the shuttle or a replacement shuttle could perform the tasks of ferrying to space the components for another large structure. Two things that come to mind is either a large space craft assembled using the same modular technology as the ISS or a photovoltaic platform. LEO construction!
